Jared Harris Joined Morbius for Paycheck
By August Tales
Actor Jared Harris has candidly admitted his motives for acting in Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff, Morbius. He reveals that he signed on for the money. Speaking with Britain’s i News, Harris concedes that his portrayal of Dr. Emil Nicholas in the ill-fated Marvel movie was squarely driven by monetary necessity. There’s a surprising level of candor here; Harris wanted to earn money, simple as that.
“I have a mortgage to pay, you know,” he quipped. “Sometimes, you commit to projects for the paycheck.”
Looking for More Laughter in Morbius
Further, Harris proposed that the movie could have used an increased dose of humor. He noted how well comedic elements contribute to the success of such films. “They thrive if you infuse humor,” he mused. However, Harris warned against stripping it of its essence.
“You can’t treat it like it’s Shakespeare,” he said. “A mischievous sense of humor would have been fitting for Morbius.”
Morbius and the Resounding Flop
The 2022 release Morbius was largely seen as a debacle in Sony’s realm of Spider-Man-related movies. Along with Harris, the film featured Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius and Matt Smith as his adversary Milo. Yet, it met with harsh criticism and under performed at the box office. Garnering a worldwide gross of merely $167 million, it fell short of its $75 million budget.
The adventure went as far as earning a Golden Raspberry Award nomination for “Worst Director” for Daniel Espinosa. Espinosa expressed his own reservations, confessing that perhaps he wasn’t the best person for the Morbius gig.
“To helm a movie by committee is tough,” Espinosa admitted. “In the end, maybe a different director would have been a more suitable choice.”
Emma Roberts and the Scapegoat of Internet Culture
In contrast to Harris’ frank analysis, Emma Roberts, the star of Madame Web, attributed her film’s unimpressive reception to the culture of the internet. She expressed her affection for Madame Web and praised the director, S.J. Clarkson.
“The internet culture turns everything into a joke,” she complained. “That’s what’s disappointing about a lot of things, including my own work.”
Despite the disappointing performance of Morbius and Madame Web, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe isn’t slowing down. Their next venture, Kraven the Hunter, is set to hit theaters later this year, on December 13.
