Doctor Who Prepares for Disney+ Era Season 3
Par August Tales
Doctor Who has always danced on the edge of innovation, but this year, it’s got a fresh breath of life. With Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the shoes of the Fifteenth Doctor, the series has embraced a new era. Yet, despite its comfortable spot in pop culture, its future on Disney+ remained uncertain for a while.
Whispers of Renewal
Earlier in the year, showrunner Russell T. Davies hinted that a third season was still up in the air. However, fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Gatwa, in a candid reveal on The Graham Norton Show, shared some promising news. He’s not only staying on as The Doctor, but filming for the next season kicks off in 2025.
“It’s all going well,” Gatwa said with enthusiasm. “We completed the second series this year, a Christmas special’s on the way, and we’re gearing up for filming the third series next year.” These words have sent ripples of excitement across the Doctor Who fandom.
Upcoming Adventures: A Peek Into the Future
Next on the horizon for Doctor Who is a 2024 Christmas special that promises to intrigue and delight. Penned by former showrunner Steven Moffat, the special features Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan in a mysterious role. Season 2 under Disney+ branding has already wrapped, though its premiere date remains under wraps. Nevertheless, Gatwa returns alongside Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday, with Varada Sethu joining as a mysterious second companion.
Gatwa’s journey as The Doctor seems rooted and robust. “It’s so much fun now,” he mentioned previously. Acclimating to the role, Gatwa said, “The Doctor seems to have settled deeper within me.” This connection promises more compelling adventures aboard the TARDIS.
A Fresh Frontier: Doctor Who Expands
Doctor Who continues its legacy with an exhilarating new spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea. Announced at San Diego Comic-Con, this miniseries is set to splash onto screens with a dramatic storyline. Featuring an ancient species rising from the ocean, the spinoff promises to push the boundaries of the Whoniverse.
Produced by Bad Wolf for BBC Studios and Disney Branded Television, the series stars Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Joining them are Doctor Who stalwarts Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim. Russell T. Davies shared, “I’m thrilled to work with such an incredible cast. This massive, thrilling drama will shake the Whoniverse to its core.”
Streamlining the Whoniverse
For those who can’t get enough, the first season of Doctor Who is now streaming exclusively on Disney+. If you’re ready to dive into this cosmic adventure, it’s the perfect time to explore the vibrant Whoniverse.
