Rings Of Power Season 2 Registers Dismal Viewership
By August Tales
In a spectacularly unspectacular fashion, Amazon Prime Video’s eye-wateringly expensive series, “Rings Of Power,” started the second season on a winded note. Shedding half its global viewership, the Season 2 premiere barely managed to rouse 902k households — a glaring drop from the maiden season’s opener which raked in a whopping 1.8 million domestic households.
No Penultimate Rating Ceremony Yet
Now, consider this: Samba TV has confirmed the woeful performance of the Rings of Power, Season 2. The significant plunge in eyeball numbers aligns nicely, albeit tragically, with the first season, which saw 63% of initial viewers disengaging mid-series. Season two, so far, seems to follow dutifully in its big brother’s ill-fated footsteps.
Flashback to the first season premiere and Amazon Prime Video was gushing about the mega-success of Rings of Power, citing 25 million viewers glued to their screens on launch day, across 240 territories. Fast-forward to the present, and the bell tolls eerily in deafening silence as Amazon is yet to rev out a similar ratings parade.
A Puzzling Ratings Puzzle
Perhaps the fan scores on Rotten Tomatoes paint a more vivid picture of the unfolding scenario. To call it disheartening would be an understatement — Rings Of Power rolls over in ratings agony at a dismal 49%. If that doesn’t sting enough, Season 1 nestles even lower at a challenging 38%. The first three episodes of the current season barely manage to surface, gasping at a barely-there 59%. Episode 4 is set to air tomorrow. Buckle up!
A Tale of Failed Expectations
On the face of it, the first episode of this season seemed robust enough. But that façade of optimism cracked swiftly. The Sauron storyline just about managed to hold water, but the rest of the narrative ship started to leak disastrously — with mankind’s subplot in the series throwing the anchors in deep despair.
Adding to the thorny mix is the claim made by the showrunners stating that they consciously chose to steer clear of fan feedback post Season 1. Seems like a bold strategy…until you see the consequences. Let’s raise a toast, shall we, to lessons learned the hard way?
