Unearthing Memories with Rob McElhenney
The off-season is a quiet time for fans of FXX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Crickets fighting for love can be heard if you listen closely. Yet, any sign of life or a morsel of information about the next season awakens excitement. This week, Rob McElhenney offered a mountain of nostalgia by posting a ‘Throwback Thursday’ image, carrying us back to September 2018, Season 13 Episode 4: “Time’s Up for the Gang.”
The episode exposed The Gang from an internet list of “Worst Bars for Women to Frequent.” They consequently take part in an erotic anti-harassment seminar to get Paddy’s off the list. Out of moments that can make a cynic chuckle with glee, McElhenney chose to highlight an ‘uplifting’ moment between his character Mac and Dee, played by Kaitlin Olson.
“Throwback Thursday. Humphrey [Humphrey Ker] wasn’t impressed, but Charlie was.” McElhenney cheekily wrote on his Instagram post. This selective nostalgia only makes us miss the show and its eccentric characters more, doesn’t it?
Emmy’s Stonewalling of Sunny
The Emmys, generally considered the Oscars for TV, have consistently ignored the genius of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Even a thumbs up from Charlie wouldn’t have resulted in a nomination based on their past record. This year, The Gang assembled to present the award for Outstanding Talk Series, using the golden opportunity to air their grievances about their perennial omission from the nomination list.
Danny DeVito, once a proud recipient of an Emmy for Taxi, reminded everyone of his show’s five seasons that brought in 34 nominations and 18 wins, a stark contrast to Sunny’s 16-season run of zero nominations. Kaitlin Olson humorously observed, “34 nominations in five years vs. zero nominations in 16 years? That math is bad!”
It makes you wonder what they’re serving at the Emmys, right? Except, of course, Sunny.
“The truth is we get validation every day. We have fans who will cry and shake if they take a picture [with us]. We’re doing what we want, making a show we’re proud of and making people happy.” Kaitlin Olson stated in an interview with Vanity Fair, justifying the show’s raunchy, lowbrow humor. Ah, the joy of extremism!
Anyway, we’ll lift our glasses of fight milk whether Sunny snatches an Emmy or not. The magic it has been creating for 16 seasons is more than enough for us. Now, where did I put my rum ham?
