Fantagraphics Set to Release ‘SEARCH & DESTROY,’ A Riveting Dystopian Manga Ahead of Comic-Con
Pardon the interruption, comic nerds, but it’s time you put down your cola because something big is coming to San Diego Comic-Con. Mark your calendars for July 23rd as Fantagraphics releases its latest gem – SEARCH & DESTROY. In collaboration with MSX: Mangasplaining Extra, created by Deb Aoki, Christopher, and Andrew Woodrow-Butcher, this release takes fandom to a new level.
The Tale of the Century: Search and Destroy
Atsushi Kaneko, the mastermind behind the narrative, guides us through a disturbingly chaotic post-cold-war era. Robot mercenaries known as “creatures” cater to the whims of the upper class, while the lower classes suffer. The plot thickens with the brutal demise of one such creature, linking an orphaned thief named Doro to a mysterious girl with beastly looks and dangerous cybernetic implants. The burning question is, who is this girl, and how is she felling the city’s behemoth creatures?
Christopher Butcher, a veteran in the comic game and editor, dubs this creation a fresh rebound on the original manga. He finds Kaneko’s work brimming with action, social commentary, and a pinch of rage. The hunt for the oppressed by a robot-girl draws you into the clear actions, stakes, and intentions, setting the stage for you to stay tuned to the sequels.
Walking Down Memory Lane: Dororo
The legendary Tezuka’s Dororo centers around Hyakkimaru, the ronin, and Dororo, Japan’s self-proclaimed best thief. The duo keeps us on edge with their ventures as they scavenge for Hyakkimaru’s organs, sacrificed by his father to demons for battlefield supremacy.
Dororo laid the foundation for a twenty-six episode anime in 1969, a 24-episode anniversary series in 2019, novels, a live-action film directed by Akihiko Shiota in 2007, and the cult-followed game – BLOOD WILL TELL on PlayStation 2.
Panel Discussion on Tezuka
Check out the panel discussion on Tezuka’s influential legacy, 35 years post his demise, conducted by Deb Aoki and Ben Applegate, the translator of Search and Destroy. They explore Tezuka’s world on Thursday at Comic-Con at 2 PM, with a sneak peek into another thrilling adaptation – Unico: Awakening.
The wait is nearly over. Get ready for a roller coaster of action, drama, vengeance, and deceit!
