Season 2 of House of the Dragon: A Mixed Reception
‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 has had its highs and lows. Initially, viewers embraced the game-changing plot twists. But, unfortunately, it seems that fans have been left hungry for more since the jaw-dropping death of Rhaenys.
The Inevitable Backlash
Fans have been quick to point out the show’s perceived shift towards “wokeness.” Just take the unexpected kiss between Mysaria and Rhaenyra. This unscripted event rubbed some fans the wrong way, questioning whether it was in keeping with the original texts. Furthermore, fans have criticized the show’s oversimplification of themes like sexism. Lastly, the decision to cast Rhaenyra as the “good guy” has not gone down well. Many argue that it contradicts the book’s complex character development.
Blame it on the Books: The Author Weighs In
G.R.R. Martin, the well-known author behind the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series, vented his frustrations in a lengthy blog post. He held no punches, outlining a hefty laundry list of issues with the show’s second season. Interestingly, an integral character, Maelor, who has an essential part in the book, did not make it into the adaptation due to casting issues and cost constraints.
The Loss of Maelor: A Butterfly Effect
The removal of Maelor severely impacted the plot, according to Martin. Notably, the absence of Maelor in the Blood and Cheese scene drained the event of its emotional potency. The ramifications are not restricted to this one scene, either. It appears the absence of Maelor will impact future plotlines, such as the Bitterbridge sequence and Helaena’s imminent suicide.
G.R.R. Martin’s Blog Post
Martin has since deleted his insightful blog post. Still, it is available for perusal on the internet. Essentially, he states that the book has a more brutal, chilling account of the Blood and Cheese scene. The show’s depiction of this moment was less impactful, made worse by the omission of Maelor.
The Bitter Effects of Maelor’s Exclusion
Martin highlights that Maelor influences the storyline disproportionately to his relative importance in the series. For example, during a tense moment where Queen Alicent needs to evict Helaena’s remaining children from King’s Landing, the protective role given to the knights was for Jaehaera and Maelor. However, the removal of Maelor simplifies the plot but removes the tension, suspense, action, and tragedy integral to the Bitterbridge scene and beyond.
A Future Without Maelor – Predictions and Speculations
The absence of Maelor crowded in more dire implications. Specifically, the suicide of Queen Helaena, popular and gentle among King’s Landing’s smallfolk, was now without any trigger event. This leads to the final impact of Maelor’s absence – the subsequent riots that erode Rhaenyra’s rule.
Martin concludes on a note of uncertainty, unsure of how the production will compensate for the omission of Maelor and other possible diversions from the original text as the show navigates through seasons 3 and 4. As fans, we remain on tenterhooks, waiting to see how the chess pieces move. That’s the beauty of ‘House of the Dragon.’
