Bill Skarsgård Unveils Vengeful Look in ‘The Crow’ Reboot
Heads up, movie buffs and fans of grungy gothic aesthetics alike: your favorite antihero is finally clawing his way back from his string of unfortunate misadventures in developmental purgatory. Yes, that’s right, “The Crow” is set for a return, and none less than Pennywise himself, Bill Skarsgård, will be stepping behind the painted face of vengeance. After years of flitting around the nebulous labyrinth that is Hollywood production, the franchise seems to have finally found a way back to the big screen, and it seems to be deadly serious this time around.
A New Feathered Avenger is Unveiled
In a move likely designed to dispel any lingering doubts, Lionsgate has released first-look images of Skarsgård in character as well as an official trailer. At a glance, this new Crow seems to carry over the same brooding romanticism that propelled the original incarnation to cult status. Add to that a short snippet showcasing an action-packed night at the opera, and things certainly seem full of promise.
Another freshly released clip teases us with an insight into the roles that pain and violence will play in the newest entry to the franchise. Not that we ever doubted that possibility — after all, we’re still talking about a resurrection-fueled tale of vengeance here.
Lock in the Date
Roll up, roll up! The Crow’s great show of revenge hits cinema screens come August 23. Hopefully, it manages to line up its ducks and stay firm on this release, as previous attempts to land the bird have seen it change its flight path almost as often as a crow switches branches.
Quote This, Raven
Skarsgård’s director, Rupert Sanders, has set the bar pretty high by stating that Skarsgård has a “disturbing beauty,” and his transformation into the darkly romantic Crow is a sight to behold – or so says Sanders. Well, disturbing or not, let’s hope that this Crow manages to soar high and make a triumphant return to the big screen!
Not Your Father’s Crow
This movie dives back into James O’Barr’s supernatural comic series with Skarsgård playing the fringed, black-clad hero seeking payback. Yet, in an interesting twist, this version seems to be bucking tradition a bit. For one, Erik’s (the Crow aka Skarsgård) fiancée, played by British singer and dancer FKA Twigs, will be taking up a much larger role, serving as a co-lead.
We won’t blame you if you’re still a bit skeptic. We’re in the same boat clutching our popcorn and crossing our fingers for good measure. After all, it’s not easy to believe “The Crow” will fly again until we’re planted in front of the big screen, witness to Bill Skarsgård in monochrome war paint.
