Green Lantern John Stewart Gets His Own Series

Green Lantern Shines Bright in Burbank: John Stewart Statue Unveiled

The superhero universe just got brighter in Burbank with a brand new symbol of justice. The city, a mecca for DC Comics fans, has unveiled a bronze statue of Green Lantern John Stewart on November 14. This gleaming beacon stands seven and a half feet tall, joining the ranks of Batman and Wonder Woman in the local superhero pantheon.

The Heroes’ Gateway

Green Lantern John Stewart’s statue, recently installed at Empire Center’s Hangar 28, embodies strength and willpower. This icon is the latest in a series of superhero tributes across Burbank. Partnering with Visit Burbank, DC, and Warner Bros. Discovery, the project celebrates these legendary characters. Notably, a Batman statue graces downtown, while Wonder Woman stands guard at Warner Bros. Studio Tour’s entrance.

The unveiling was a grand affair. Significant figures attended, including DC’s Jim Lee and Burbank Vice Mayor Nikki Perez. Attendees such as DC writers Jeremy Adams, Morgan Hampton, and Tim Sheridan added sparkle to the event. Jim Lee reminisced about Stewart’s groundbreaking debut in 1971. He highlighted the character’s importance as the first modern Black costumed superhero in DC history.

A New Guardian in Town

John Stewart, introduced in Green Lantern #87, shattered many stereotypes. He was a groundbreaking creation by writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams. Stewart’s lack of a mask symbolized a departure from traditional superhero tropes. Lee emphasized the uniqueness brought by his unmasked presence.

In the comic world, Stewart’s adventures have been legendary. He’s featured in Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, and Green Lantern: Beware My Power. Lee sees a bright future ahead, with Stewart’s anticipated live-action debut on DC Studios’ Lanterns TV series. This statue is not just a tribute; it’s a testament to his enduring legacy in DC’s storytelling.

The sculpture, tipping the scales at over 600 pounds, was crafted by Burbank’s American Fine Arts Foundry and Fabrication. Inspired by artist Jamal Campbell, it embodies a design revered by fans worldwide. To mark this milestone, Visit Burbank released an exclusive comic, Green Lantern John Stewart, Global Guardian. Written by John Ridley and Charlotte Fullerton McDuffie, the comic features stunning art by Amancay Nahuelpan and others, with a cover illustrated by Campbell.

24/7 Beacon of Heroism

For those eager to witness this monument, make your way to 1775 N Victory Place. The statue, a round-the-clock attraction, shines as a beacon for fans and passersby. This latest installment solidifies Burbank’s status as a haven for superhero lore, inviting fans to bask in the presence of these towering icons.

As Superman eyes a potential future statue, the DC universe’s horizon looks promising. Until then, visitors have plenty to marvel at, with Green Lantern John Stewart leading the charge towards a brighter tomorrow.
