Hugo Weaving Avoids ‘Rings of Power’

The Rings of Power: Love it, Hate it, Haven’t Seen It

So, ‘The Rings of Power’ is back for round two. Does that surprise you? It should, given its initial reception. After all, that colossal Amazon price tag set expectations as high as a Middle Earth eagle.

Yet despite the hype, trouble started brewing as the first promo material leaked. The Critic Circus Begins.

From criticisms skyrocketing over what looked like garage-sale quality costumes to the depiction of Galadriel; the show was a magnet for complaints. Let’s not forget the source material inconsistencies that had Tolkien aficionados everywhere shaking their heads. One of the critical contentions revolved around a potential enemies-to-lovers arc hinted at between Galadriel and Halbrand cause everybody needs a romantic subplot, right?

Better Times Ahead?

Despite this, season 2 has been dubbed “excellent” by critics. Some point out distinct improvements. Whether these compliments will endure the entire series? Time will tell. Yet these positive responses may lure in those previously ambivalent about the show.

A Legend Checks In

Among these potential new viewers? None other than Hugo Weaving, who you certainly remember from his iconic turn as Elrond in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ trilogies. With Elrond reprised in ‘The Rings of Power’ by Robert Aramayo, it does pique one’s interest.

While Weaving’s rooting for Aramayo, he’s confessed that he hasn’t sampled a single episode because he doesn’t want to “return to Middle-earth.”

Bye Bye Middle-earth

“I haven’t seen it,” Weaving admitted, “I spent too long in Middle-earth, and I don’t particularly want to go back there.” Seems like someone’s had his fill of hobbits and precious rings. Although the role of Elrond holds weight among Tolkien fans, Weaving doesn’t share the sentiment. It’s just another notch on his acting belt, not the crowning jewel.

While he acknowledges the magnitude of ‘The Rings of Power’ and respects the work executives including Aramayo have done, he has not, and reportedly won’t watch the show. This isn’t an indictment of the show’s quality or the performances involved; it’s simply a personal choice.

But enough about Hugo. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts below.
