I Really, Really Liked It A Lot

Quentin Tarantino recently made a splash on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast. His topic of choice? Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux. Tarantino is renowned for his candid opinions, and this was no exception. He showered the movie with praise, much to the delight of fans.

Tarantino’s Unexpected Embrace

Tarantino admitted he loved the film. “I really, really liked it, really,” he confessed. Heading into the movie, his expectations were high. He anticipated an experience ripe with expert filmmaking, yet expected it might not work as a true movie. That, however, was not the case. He found himself engrossed in the film’s depth.

The director was thrilled by its imperfections. “I’m just nihilistic enough to enjoy a movie that doesn’t quite work,” Tarantino explained. Contrary to his initial belief, it wasn’t merely an intellectual exercise. The movie whisked him away. Musical sequences in particular caught his attention. The more mundane the songs, the more he loved them.

A Nod to His Own Legacy

Tarantino saw elements of his work everywhere. While the first Joker echoed Taxi Driver, this one screamed Natural Born Killers. He felt an affinity with the movie’s tone, claiming it was the Natural Born Killers he dreamt of. As Mickey and Mallory’s creator, he admired the direction Phillips took.

“Un film de Joker,” he called it, impressed by Phillips’s choices. In Tarantino’s eyes, Phillips embodied the Joker himself. He viewed the director’s antics as an embodiment of the iconic villain.

A Bold Statement

Tarantino’s analysis didn’t end there. He portrayed Phillips as a rebellious force. Phillip’s decisions, he suggested, were designed as a shock to the industry. “He’s saying f— you to all of them,” Tarantino exclaimed. This bold statement resonated not just with audiences but with every Hollywood stakeholder.

This film arose from the twisted mind of the Joker himself, Tarantino opined. It’s a fitting creation, given the character’s chaotic nature. That audacity echoed in Phillips’s unique storytelling choices.
