A Forgotten Hero: The Enduring Legacy of Resistance
Resistance never topped Sony’s bestseller lists. Yet, its place in fans’ hearts remains unshaken. The alternate history saga, set against alien invaders in the retro-futuristic 1950s, wrapped up with 2011’s Resistance 3. Fans, however, always yearned for more. Recently, Insomniac Games’ founder Ted Price revealed they had shared this desire. However, Sony didn’t see eye-to-eye.
Behind the Scenes at Insomniac
Reflecting on the past, Price shared that Resistance 4 was once pitched. It was "a wonderful concept," he remarked in a chat with Kinda Funny Games. But the timing and market landscape didn’t favor its continuation. Passion drove the Insomniac team. They envisioned an extended story plunging deeper into the Chimeran lore. Yet, it remained just that—a dream.
Why did Sony hesitate? Price hinted at "market opportunity." Post-apocalyptic themes were in vogue. The Last of Us, a major hit in 2013, might have crowded the stage. Colin Moriarty of Sacred Symbols reported Sony’s portfolio concerns. Resistance 4 felt too akin to The Last of Us. Therefore, they opted against risking overlap.
A Future for Resistance?
Does Resistance have a future? Price seems optimistic. He’s stepping down, but Sony holds the keys to the series. Insomniac may be Marvel-focused, yet another studio could step up. Resistance might find new life, bringing back its gripping battles and eerie environments.
Resistance 3 concluded its saga with Joseph Capelli at its heart. "We closed many loops," Price noted. That ending, however, left room for future narratives. New chapters or fresh twists might await. “Returning to a franchise can be invigorating,” Price mused. Being part of Sony means the possibility persists.
Fans, for now, dream of a remastered trilogy for newer consoles. With no native PS5 release, streaming offers the sole gateway via PlayStation Plus Premium. The longing persists, as games that once graced the PS3 linger in a digital limbo. Resistance might be dormant, but its legacy endures among its dedicated audience.
