La Borinqueña Collector’s Edition: Championing Justice and Culture
Kicking Off a Movement with La Borinqueña
August Tales reports on a comic that’s more than fiction. It’s a force that fosters activism and drives fundraising. The unique comic, La Borinqueña by Edgardo Miranda-Rodríguez, meets just that description. Its protagonist pushes for dialogue around the Puerto Rican diaspora. In other words, she champions the pursuit of justice for communities seeking to preserve their identities and traditions.
Since 2016, Miranda-Rodríguez made sure that his comic heroine serves as a beacon for these matters. Now, all the early chapters of La Borinqueña are available as a luxury hardcover. Not only is it an ideal introduction for newcomers, but it’s also a must-have for dedicated followers.
Inside the Comic
La Borinqueña Volume 1 sports original cover art by Ariel Jesús Colón. Inside, you’ll find illustrations by Will Rosado (GI Joe) and Christopher Sotomayor (Avengers). If you’re new to this saga, it revolves around a resilient champion. She goes head-to-head with threats symbolic of hardships faced by Hispanic immigrants, particularly in Puerto Rico.
Our heroine identifies her unique culture as a superpower. Just a glance at her uniform, engulfed in the Puerto Rican flag’s colors, makes this clear. Much like Captain America, her striking appearance declares that a formidable Puerto Rican presence is vigilant for truth and justice.
Charitable Impact and a Future Release
A segment of the comic’s profits helps fuel Miranda-Rodríguez’s ongoing charity work. To date, $200,000 has been donated to local Puerto Rican organizations. This illustrates the character’s expansive effect beyond the comic pages. For instance, Ricanstruction: Reminiscing & Rebuilding Puerto Rico exemplifies her influence. The book, produced with prominent figures from the comic world, aids in Puerto Rico’s recovery after the Hurricane María catastrophe in 2017.
Eyeing sustained growth, Miranda-Rodríguez also revealed upcoming 1:12 scale figures from the La Borinqueña universe. The collection contains La Borinqueña, Luz, Oro El Coquí Dorado, and La Gárgola, with production by Boss Fight Studios.
Retailers begin pre-orders for the hardcover and action figures in September, with a release targeting the holiday season.
