LEGO’s New Twist on Toy Transformations

Hasbro’s Transformers sets have gained complexity over the years. With the stress on, parts are designed to detach instead of snapping. Imagine those parts breaking into countless fragments. That’s what we have with LEGO’s second official, actual-transfroming Transformers set. Handling it literally demands delicacy.

Unyielding Puzzle in Plastic

Bumblebee, the star of this set, comes packed in ten bags with a thick instruction booklet and a helpful companion in the LEGO building app. The latter’s 3D rotation feature is a lifesaver for aging eyes. LEGO sets generally prize inside-out engineering. This one is no exception with its multiple internal joints and pivot points. It’s your engineering chops tested in miniature, building parts indiscriminately, before a surprising realization of the bigger picture.

Repeat after Me

With Bumblebee’s symmetry, the building process entails making a part and then replicating it in reverse. The instructions ease this task. Yet, figuring out the pattern and the available pieces permits simultaneous construction of both sides, unless that sounds like a foul play.

Build with Caution

The assembly wasn’t a walk in the park. Clicky joint pieces, which do require force, were tricky. In one case, they shattered a foot when misdirected, forcing a backtrack.

Vroom to Gloom

The first step is crafting the car form which is sleek, but Transformer fans will find the transformation process delicate. Detaching the windshield, adjusting the sides, unfolding the legs, and feet, are intuitive steps to the more rigid construct. Finding the equilibrium point might take some time.

In the Full Throttle of Big Transformations

The robot is not as robust as its car form. It might serve as a decorative model, but the construction could compromise its integrity long-term. LEGO provides extra plain-yellow tiles if you prefer Bumblebee in full disguise which was a cool feature.

Despite minor setbacks, it was not as demanding as other kits and did not require a complete rebuild. Obscure features like bumper stickers and hidden bees added layers to the unfolding LEGO story.
