Marvel Disregards Fans

Controversy Surrounds X-Men ’97 Amidst Creative Team Change and Accusations

Written by August Tales

Despite numerous hurdles and deviations from the canonical series, the X-Men ’97 animated revival was a remarkable success for Marvel. Indeed, it was nostalgia combined with a compelling storyline and familiar animation style that won over the series’ original fans. And hence, Disney’s decision to renew the show seems natural.

However, it’s critical to mention that Season 2 will see a different creative team. Let’s dig deeper into that.

Creative Conflicts & Controversies

Regrettably, Beau DeMayo, the brains behind the original show and the remake series, was sacked. The creative genius found himself embroiled in an Internet feud with Disney, consequent to allegations of sexual misconduct.

Interestingly, DeMayo had also shared some rather ambitious plans regarding the series. He designed an intriguing roadmap, involving Onslaught and Apocalypse, only to be dismissed by the bigwigs at Disney. Consequently, he publicly criticized Marvel, fuelling a fan divide.

What Went Down with DeMayo

Let’s briefly revisit what led to today’s impasse. In the nostalgic rush of late 90s, Beau DeMayo revived the beloved original animated X-Men series. However, even before the premiere of the beloved reboot, DeMayo was sacked for alleged sexual impropriety. The situation only flared as he found himself at loggerheads with Disney. The nail in the coffin was the news of his series plans being discarded.

DeMayo, who was on the cusp of completing Season 3 having delivered a successful Season 2, found himself in the lurch. The fallout sparked a lengthy Twitter exchange, causing quite a stir among fans and industry folks alike.

DeMayo lets loose

During these exchanges, DeMayo let loose of his pent-up disappointment, saying “Marvel does not care about fans…They care about money, and they routinely boast about how fans will watch or hate-watch either way.” Of course, there are always two sides to a conflict, but many fans found themselves nodding in agreement with DeMayo.

Fans like “pleeb” admitted a disdain for Disney, while “Brooklyn Monk” and “Dominick Viggianno X” criticized Marvel for its lack of respect for comics. “TheDixonWay” went even further, speculating on Marvel’s motives to deny DeMayo producer credits.
