Marvel Explains Firing of X-Men ’97 Creator Beau DeMayo
Marvel, the comic book kingpin, and Beau DeMayo, the creator of “X-Men ‘97”, seem to be tugging at the ends of a rope, each with their version of why DeMayo was given the boot. The head writer of the Disney+ series was fired in March 2024 after two complete seasons, with no official reasoning offered at that time by the Marvel magnates.
DeMayo, though initially tight-lipped, decided to air the dirty laundry via an X post on August 15, 2024. The former head writer expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to fabricate the X-Men revival and acknowledged the support from fans. The sting, however, came when he linked his exit to a gay pride fan-art he posted earlier.
The chap also griped about Marvel erasing his Season 2 credits post the prideful art share. In DeMayo’s words, this was just “the latest in a troubling pattern” he allegedly encountered while working on “X-Men ’97” and “Blade.”
The Word From Marvel
The comic giant responded to DeMayo’s disclosure by releasing a buzzworthy statement to The Hollywood Reporter. Iron-clad as ever, Marvel declared, “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately, and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”
Yet, the plot thickens. The Hollywood Reporter added some juice to the news, claiming, “sources say it involved sexual misconduct.” Post his unceremonious departure, an agreement, it seems, was chalked out on Tweeting about the show – something DeMayo wasn’t particularly good at retiring from, which ostensibly led to his Season 2 credits being pulled.
Displaying his knack for stirring the plot, DeMayo tweeted, “The truth will be revealed. After their Disney Plus disaster, Marvel wants to mislead with alleged contract breaches over tweets. It’s tragic it’s come to this but unsurprising. Stay tuned.” The tweet drips with irony as he continued his social media spree despite the show-tweet agreement.
In another twisty tweet, DeMayo wrote, “This is their Disney-Marvel’s usual playbook. Legal letters as well as other items to prove their long-standing pattern to follow. It’s about finding a safe outlet. Thanks for your faith and patience.”
With DeMayo promising more interesting revelations and smarting from the firing, this boiling broth between Marvel and its erstwhile creative lead is far from over. But folks, remember to get your popcorn ready because in the words of Stan Lee — “Excelsior!”
