The Marvelous Marvel Legends Return
Flash rewind, if you will, to last year’s Comic-Con. Marvel Legends left a memorable impression on avid collectors by resurrecting Crystar, a such an obscure character from the ’80s, you would have been forgiven for forgetting they owned the rights.
This year, in a shocking reunion with the past, the ’70s electronic toy icon, ROM, is being given new life. You know, the toy that inspired a Marvel comic book, which ironically ended up outliving the toy that inspired it. Well, ROM is primed for a modern revival in action figure form.
As for Crystar’s buddies, it might be in the pipeline, or so says Hasbro’s Ryan Ting. Naturally, Mr. Ting kept the suspense alive by saying, “potentially.”
The Reign of the Dragon
The pièce de résistance, however, was a towering, awe-inspiring Dragon Man. You’ll most likely need a really large shelf (and possibly a bigger paycheck), because this beast will be up for pre-order to gauge how many people would be interested.
Ting explains the no-pressure-pre-order system unlike crowdfunding, noting, “We wanna make sure we’re building the right quantity…maybe even a repeat pre-order for those who missed the first round.”
When it comes to choices for character two-packs, Ting and his colleague Dwight Stall relive their playground days of superhero disagreements. Ting wanted Chitauri, but Stall’s choice, the Outriders from Infinity War, won the race. But hey, there’s always next time, Ting.
A Horse of A Different Color
Apparently, choices are not the only dilemma for these Marvel moguls; they also have a horse issue. Stall humorously appeals to collectors about this hurdle, “Petition Ryan. Let him know we need horses!”
In perfect character, Ting responds, “I’ve one word for you, Dwight – neigh!”
Masking Marvel Studios Secrets
In the realm of Deadpool & Wolverine, the camaraderie is smoother. Despite a minor hiccup with movie date shuffling, the iconic characters will debut in toy form this coming October.
Stall acknowledges the tight-knit secrecy surrounding Marvel Studios, and the challenging fun of fishing out the big hits from a limited pool of characters. Fans, brace yourselves.
Shrouded in the notorious Marvel Studios mystery, don’t expect any spoiler characters in action figure form until, perhaps, a year from now.
Faces of the Fantastic
In curiosity piqued, Stall reassures eager fans that a John Krasinski Reed Richards figure marking the new Fantastic Four movie, as seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, could be on the horizon. Similarly, Ryan Reynolds fans can hold on to a glimmer of hope, as a possible Ryan Reynolds-Deadpool or perhaps, Nicepool is under consideration.
In the meanwhile, Mr. Reynolds, sign that deal! Lest you be left with regret and a trail of Green Lantern figures being the only ones with your lovely mug.
In essence, Marvel Legends embodies the blend of wistfulness and innovation, bringing forward the familiar faces in a fresh lover of paint. In the midst of all the excitement, let’s not forget what makes these action figures truly legendary. The charm of the stories they tell and the memories attached to them, and that is one thing that definitely won’t change.
