Matty Cardarople, Star of Fallout and Reservation Dogs…

Matty Cardarople Discusses His Experience on ‘Fallout’ and ‘Reservation Dogs’

Matty Cardarople, a man of many comedic hats, has carved quite a niche for himself on the small screen. Not a Stranger (Things) to captivating audiences with his performances, Cardarople’s garnered some serious street cred with his roles on FX’s ‘Reservation Dogs,’ Prime Video’s ‘Fallout,’ and ‘Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,’ courtesy of the streaming behemoth Netflix.

In ‘Fallout,’ Cardarople brought to life Huey, an enthusiastic organ harvester, with his trusty sidekick, Squirrel (played by Elvis Lopez). Their little gig, located in the comfortingly dubbed Super Duper Mart, relied on the gentle ministrations of their Mr. Handy robot, Snip Snip, voiced with gusto by Matt Berry. Suffice it to say, Huey loved his job and those ghoulish clients of theirs, though those feelings weren’t mutual.

Behind the Scenes in a Post-Apocalyptic World

When asked about his post-apocalyptic work conditions, Cardarople cracks, “It was a blast, and the ghouls looked so realistic. I was acting with them in the scene, and I got terrified, but that fear dissipated when I saw them eat donuts. I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, we’re on a TV shoot.’ It was a blast to be in that world and fun.”

Transitioning from the post-nuclear world to a junkyard wasn’t too hard for our hero. In ‘Reservation Dogs,’ Cardarople played Ansel, the loyal mechanic sidekick of Kenny Boy (Kirk Fox). Frequently seen defending their turf, Cardarople enjoyed his recurring character across all three seasons. Remembering his time on set, he shares, “Being with the crew, we all eat lunch together. A fond memory is when we sat and watched a bus get blown up. I’ve never experienced that.”

A Warm Set and Fond Memories

Amidst fillibustery sets and exploding buses, Cardarople recalls the warmth of his director, “I remember one time I got sick, and (creator) Sterlin [Harjo] sent me a bunch of soup to make me feel better. I thought that was such a cool experience and so nice of him. He has so much grace and is the best director ever.”

At the end of the day, Cardarople’s successful run can be credited to his commitment to each character, a wild imagination, and the downright oddity that is post-apocalyptic acting. So, next time you binge-watch ‘Fallout,’ ‘Reservation Dogs,’ or drift into Bikini Bottom, remember the man who made organ harvesting look fun – Matty Cardarople.
