By: August Tales

Mike Mignola, recent Eisner Hall of Fame inductee, and Hellboy’s creator, has taken over the Philippe Labaune Gallery in New York City. Now, there are over 100 original pieces of his comic pages, illustrations, and watercolors on display.

On Thursday, September 19th, a free opening reception will kick off the event, starting at 6 pm. The gallery doors will remain open until Saturday, October 26th, 2024. Brace yourself for the roller coaster of art.

Feast your eyes on the Century Collection

The exhibit features over 30 of Mignola’s watercolors, along with 100 black and white pieces. You’ll get to see about 50 of Hellboy’s illustrious covers and ten of his original comic book pages. Look out for Mignola’s illustrations for Beehive Books’ much-awaited new edition of Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio.

Moreover, an official 64-page art catalog from the exhibit will be waiting for you. It’s filled with 31 new watercolors centered around Mignola’s usual suspects: skulls, monsters, and the supernatural.

All hell breaks loose on September 18th

Just before the free public reception, The Philippe Labaune Gallery will host an invite-only preview event titled “Hell, Ink, and Water: The Art of Mike Mignola Exhibit” on September 18th. If you’re up for visiting, the gallery is at 534 West 24th Street, New York. It’s open from Thursday through Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm.

Dark allure alive and kicking

Philippe Labaune is certainly enraptured by Mignola’s work. According to him, it’s not unlike dropping into a beautifully crafted dream, which, strangely enough, you don’t wish to wake up from. He believes Mignola’s art to be eerily captivating, right from Mignola’s linework, the strength of black-and-white, his character design, right to his narrative force.

Mignola tackles a new creative journey

Mike Mignola says all these years of preparation are finally paying off and he’s excited to explore territories beyond Hellboy. While still in love with Hellboy, Mignola is keen on birthing a new side of himself in this artistic world.

Book and exhibit, a perfect tag team

Coinciding with the gallery, a book release party for Mignola’s upcoming IDW title, “Hell, Ink & Water: The Art of Mike Mignola”, is on schedule. New York Comic-Con attendees, take note: the gallery is hosting a book release party during that time!

Mignola, the maestro at work

The Hell, Ink, and Water: The Art of Mike Mignola Exhibit is part of the thirtieth-anniversary celebration of Mignola’s Hellboy creation. Past projects include Beehive Books’ “Pinocchio: The Illuminated Edition.” It features more than 50 Mignola illustrations, along with over 100 text annotations by Lemony Snicket.

Invoking the folklore fantasy

In January 2025, Dark Horse Comics will also publish “Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown”, an anthology of folklore-inspired fantasy stories written and illustrated by Mignola. It’s the first publication from Curious Objects, Mignola’s own imprint at Dark Horse, opening up a whole new world of weird, wicked, and whimsical stories.

So, gear up art lovers, this October, it’s all things Mignola!
