Miyazaki’s First Studio Ghibli…

Hayao Miyazaki is a name synonymous with mesmerizing animations and compelling storytelling. Celebrated for his groundbreaking works with Studio Ghibli, he has repeatedly enchanted audiences globally. Though the recent triumph of “The Boy and the Heron” was initially declared his swan song, Miyazaki continues to shape the world of anime. Fans will soon have the chance to explore one of his earliest projects as “Future Boy Conan” makes its long-awaited debut on streaming platforms. Although not a Ghibli production, Miyazaki’s signature style is undeniably woven through this series.

A Journey Through Time and Adventures

Originally airing in 1978, “Future Boy Conan” predates Miyazaki’s classic “The Castle of Cagliostro” from the late ’70s. The series unfolds in a dystopian future set in 2008, following the titular Conan as he navigates a world shrouded in mystery and danger. Teaming up with a mysterious girl named Lana, Conan endeavors to uncover the secrets of their world. As they evade a shadowy group of pursuants, they forge new friendships and embark on thrilling adventures. The series, known for its engaging narrative and imaginative art, initially aired for 26 episodes and revisited with a sequel in 1999, albeit not directed by Miyazaki. This beloved tale will premiere on RetroCrush on April 18th, finally accessible for streaming.

Reviving a Classic for New Audiences

Yolanda Macias, Cineverse’s Chief Content Officer, expressed excitement about bringing “Future Boy Conan” to RetroCrush. “We’re thrilled to offer fans this foundational work in animation history,” Macias stated. With its dynamic action, serene wonder, and timeless themes of survival and resilience, “Future Boy Conan” promises to captivate Japanese animation lovers, newcomers, and Miyazaki enthusiasts alike.

Despite being a renowned figure, Miyazaki’s “Future Boy Conan” remained elusive in North America for almost four decades. 2021 marked a turning point when GKIDS announced it had secured the rights, presenting the series to Western audiences with a 4K restoration. Until now, the series had not graced any streaming platform, but RetroCrush seized the opportunity to change that.

As the curtain rises for streaming Miyazaki’s early masterpiece, anime fans are eager to revisit this hidden gem. Follow your favorite anime updates for insights into Miyazaki’s past and future creations.
