Marvel’s X-Men Prelude: Adamantium’s Arrival in "Captain America: Brave New World"
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is steadily crafting the path for the X-Men’s entrance. With "Captain America: Brave New World," one significant piece falls into place.
Meet Adamantium: The Metal of Legends
The movie introduces adamantium, renowned as the nearly indestructible metal bonded with Wolverine’s skeleton. While Hugh Jackman will reprise Wolverine in "Deadpool & Wolverine," this marks adamantium’s first appearance in the main Avengers timeline. Surprisingly, it stems from an unexpected source.
In "Eternals" (2021), Earth was revealed as an egg for a Celestial named Tiamut. Had it fully emerged, the planet faced destruction. Sersi intervened, freezing Tiamut mid-transformation and leaving a colossal structure in the ocean. This remnant, now known as Celestial Island, stirs global intrigue, which "Brave New World" explores.
Global Race for Adamantium
Countries have established research outposts on Celestial Island. Japan’s mining efforts discovered adamantium, igniting a scramble among nations and shadowy organizations to secure the potent metal. This metal is stronger and more versatile than Wakanda’s vibranium, making it highly coveted.
The Serpent Society, an elite group of mercenaries led by Sidewinder—portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito—is already wielding adamantium. Press footage displays a chilling scene: a Serpent Society member slicing through Captain America’s vibranium-reinforced suit with an adamantium weapon.
X-Men Integration: A Deliberate Pace
Marvel producer Nate Moore notes the strategic introduction of X-Men elements. Following Disney’s 2019 acquisition of X-Men rights, there was a waiting period before their MCU integration. Moore explained, “As we now explore X-Men’s path, we aim to sprinkle these elements gradually to avoid overwhelming fans.”
Moore emphasized that Tiamut wouldn’t just be a background element without purpose. Instead, it holds an integral place in the larger story. “Merging Tiamut with adamantium made sense; it’s unique to the MCU,” Moore revealed.
Setting the Stage for Mutants
Marvel’s quiet introduction of mutant hints hasn’t gone unnoticed. Ms. Marvel discovered her mutation in her series, while Namor was branded a mutant in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Kelsey Grammer returned as Beast in “The Marvels,” continuing the trend.
Patrick Stewart reprised his role as Professor Xavier in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Meanwhile, “What If…?” introduced Storm. These breadcrumbs pave the way for the X-Men’s forthcoming MCU debut, which Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed post-"Avengers: Secret Wars" in 2027.
A Thoughtful Approach to X-Men’s Arrival
Moore emphasized a careful approach to integrating the X-Men, ensuring a seamless fit within the MCU’s evolving narrative. “As we edge towards X-Men’s introduction, we are setting the stage, preventing a deluge of new concepts,” he stated.
With "Brave New World" establishing adamantium and cultivating tensions around it, Marvel is positioning the X-Men integration as a natural evolution of the story. As the MCU expands, it will be captivating to see further clues and connections emerge leading to their highly anticipated arrival.
