Creature Commandos Animation Series Set to Shine on DC Variant Covers
The monster-themed superhero universe recently got a bit heavier with the unveiling of the first trailer for “Creature Commandos”. This new, mature-rated animated series is a fresh take on the iconic Monster Squad from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s expanding DC Universe.
Indeed, everyone’s favorite horror-inspired miscreants have been sneaking in and out of the comics since the dawn of the decade – 1980, to be precise. Now, as the countdown to the series December debut gears up and the anticipation among fans amplifies, DC is rolling up its sleeves to promote the show uniquely. Think along the lines of a sartorial parade: four “Creature Commandos” variant covers adorning the December issues of Action Comics #1076, Batman and Robin #15, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #33, and Superman #20. Let’s not forget the exciting cherry-on-top- the DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos title penned by David Dastmalchian, star of The Suicide Squad.
And Who Are These Eccentric Post-human Commandos?
Dreamt up by the imaginative tandem of J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick in Weird War Tales #93, the Creature Commandos represent a squad of human-monster chimeras carrying out covert actions for the government. The TV iteration will parade a charismatic retinue: Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour), Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma), Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), Dr. Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn), and Weasel (Sean Gunn). The ensemble will also feature Anya Chalotra as Circe, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Steve Agee as John Economos.
Will the Creature Commandos Trade their Toons for a Real Backdrop?
Word is already out that the Creature Commandos cast will flex their acting muscles in a live set-up, with appearances confirmed in Gunn’s forthcoming Superman movie slated for Summer of 2025. In a series of flippant interviews last year, Harbour tantalizingly hinted about the odds of his transformation from animation to live performance. Apparently, the deep seethed inhuman rage stirred with a dab of humor in Frankenstein provided a delightful palate for his portrayal.
In Harbour’s own words, “James is just such an incredible guy.” One can’t help but agree, especially considering the innovative universe he has constructed where characters seamlessly morph between live action and animation.
Swing by Max this December to savor the long-awaited debut of Creature Commandos, but before you exit, take a sneak peek at the first glimpse of DC’s November 2024 variant covers for the series.
