Squashing the Hopes: Goonies Sequel Rumors Debunked

Legacy sequels are a hot topic these days, and the whispers around the long-desired sequel to “The Goonies” jumped up on our radar this week. The rumors gained traction when reports flooded the internet suggesting “The Goonies 2” was good to go. Adding to the fervor, Sean Astin, a star from the original movie, posted an intriguing update.

Let’s hit pause for a moment, though. Two original cast members have just rubbished these reports, according to Variety. The rumor mill has been abruptly stalled with their social media posts denying the sequel’s existence.

From the Stars Themselves: ‘Goonies 2’ Not in the Works

First to break the news to fans was Martha Plimpton via Instagram. She stated emphatically, “People, there is no ‘Goonies 2’ script, there is no one ‘attached.’ Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.” Yet another icon from “The Goonies,” child superstar of the ’80s, Corey Feldman, volunteered that he had “no information” regarding a sequel. Hence, he dispelled this rumor that had been circulating widely.

Would 2025, coinciding with the film’s 40th anniversary, not make the perfect time for a sequel? However, as Plimpton and Feldman confirm, this is far from reality.

Goonies 2: A Legacy Sequel That Might Just Remain a Dream

We first heard rumblings about the sequel way back in 2014. This was brought to life by Astin’s bold claim upon the possibility of a “Goonies 2” movie: “I’m 1,000% certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it.” Unfortunately, since then, original “Goonies” director Richard Donner has passed away. Additionally, Steven Spielberg seems less invested in lightweight entertainers and more engrossed in serious cinema.

Moreover, the paycheck for original actors like Ke Huy Quan and Josh Brolin must have inflated significantly. With the impressive box office performance of ’80s classics like “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” you’d expect Warner Bros. to be in full chase. But still, it seems destined that “Goonies 2” will only ever exist on our wish lists.
