Cobra Kai’s Curtain Call: Ralph Macchio on Legacy and What’s Next
Ralph Macchio might be closing one chapter with Cobra Kai, but the next era of the Karate Kid saga awaits him. Throughout the Cobra Kai series, Macchio embraced his role as both mentor and father figure. "Paying the legacy forward is what Daniel LaRusso does now," Macchio said. The Karate Kid Legends film, releasing at the end of May, promises to continue this theme. "Excited about that next chapter in storytelling," he beamed, proud of bringing Cobra Kai to a satisfying end.
The series picks up 40 years after the original Karate Kid film. It premiered on YouTube Red in 2018 before being picked up by Netflix. Since then, it has become one of Netflix’s top hits, with Macchio reprising his famous role as Daniel LaRusso. William Zabka returns as Johnny Lawrence, now an ally in their karate journey. Together, they run rival dojos, training the next generation and passing on their wisdom.
The final stretch of Cobra Kai airs mid-February, capping off six thrilling seasons of rivalry and camaraderie. Yet, the Karate Kid story continues with a new film, Karate Kid Legends. Set three years after Cobra Kai, it shows Daniel back in Okinawa, taking on a new challenge.
A New Chapter with Karate Kid Legends
This time around, Daniel joins forces with Jackie Chan to train a fresh face, Ben Wang, as the new karate kid. Wang was selected through an extensive worldwide talent search. In many ways, Macchio steps into the shoes of Mr. Miyagi, originally portrayed by Pat Morita. The iconic Miyagi character remains close to Macchio’s heart. "I think he would’ve been first in line and bought popcorn for everybody," Macchio reflected. Ensuring Miyagi’s essence was integral to Cobra Kai was crucial for him.
From the beginning, Macchio insisted that Miyagi’s spirit be woven into the narrative. "I needed that not to be forgotten," he confessed. Without Miyagi, the entire saga would lack its foundation. Honoring those who contributed to this legacy is a significant responsibility for Macchio. "I take pride in making my voice heard," he expressed, mindful of the franchise’s history.
As Cobra Kai wraps up, fans can look forward to fresh adventures in Karate Kid Legends. Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 debuts on Netflix on February 13, while Karate Kid Legends hits theaters on May 30. After four decades, the saga continues to evolve, offering fans new stories to cherish.
