Review: One World Under Doom #1 – A Brave New Start

Doom Ascends: Sorcerer Supreme and Ruler

After six months under the dark veil, Doctor Doom steps into the spotlight as the new Sorcerer Supreme. The ruler of Latveria, cloaked in mystery, has been quiet for too long. Except for placing a mystic geas on Spider-Man, he stayed within his nation’s borders. But now, he breaks his silence, claiming dominion over "One World Under Doom."

Doom’s address to global leaders shakes the foundation of international politics. Most rulers have surrendered their lands to his emerging Latverian empire. In a grand barter, he vows to elevate these nations to Latveria’s standards. An end to war, along with free healthcare and education, becomes his promise.

Heroes on Edge

This bold move smells foul to the Fantastic Four and Avengers. They are sure Doom conceals sinister motives, but they remain stalled. Until HYDRA invades Latveria. The unexpected twist of Baron Zemo joining Doom raises eyebrows. Heroes’ relentless efforts, however, only bolster public opinion in Doom’s favor.

Veteran comic enthusiasts will recognize that Doom’s global conquest isn’t a first. Yet, Ryan North brings this tale at a peculiar time. Today’s global politics mirror the comic’s wild events. American heroes opposing free healthcare might draw snickers, but political commentary stays away. Instead, it focuses on the classic clash of freedom versus security.

A Straight Play with a Comedic Twist

Known for his humor, North opts for a serious tone in "One World Under Doom #1." Still, absurdity peeks through, like Doom’s tyrannosaurus rex variant. Is it Doom’s dinosaur ride that amuses, or the Fantastic Four’s mild reactions?

R.B. Silva’s art imbues the issue with dazzling scenes. His action blocking is extraordinary, making the battles command attention. Unique character designs and a clean aesthetic shine through. David Curiel’s vibrant colors complete the frame perfectly.

While character portrayals may spark debate—Doom’s artful deceit for instance—this first installment is a promising start. The vibrant art and riveting action captivate, while its core message hits at the right moment. "One World Under Doom" might just be 2025’s standout miniseries.
