After a yearlong break and a wave of behind-the-scenes changes, Rick and Morty is officially returning to Adult Swim. Season 8 of the fan-favorite animated series will premiere on May 25 at 11:00 PM ET/PT, bringing viewers back into the multiverse of mayhem and mutated morality.
This marks the first time in years the show skipped an annual release. Production delays tied to the WGA strike pushed back its return, disrupting the usual rhythm that fans had grown used to. But with a new teaser dropped as part of Adult Swim’s 2025 April Fools’ Day stunt, the countdown has officially begun.
A Multiverse Reset — With Familiar Chaos
The previous season introduced major changes, most notably the departure of series co-creator and original voice actor Justin Roiland. New actors stepped in to voice Rick and Morty, and while fans were skeptical at first, the shift was surprisingly well received. Season 7 also tilted the show’s long-running formula on its head by reshuffling the timeline and teasing deeper narrative arcs.
Yet according to showrunner Scott Marder, the chaos has a plan. He’s hinted that the series has always been steering toward a 10-season saga, and Season 8 will bring viewers one step closer to that vision. While episodic chaos will remain a core ingredient, expect pivotal story developments sprinkled in—especially in select, lore-heavy episodes.
“We’ve got a couple ideas for Season 10 already pinned,” Marder previously said, underscoring that the narrative blueprint is set. “There are arcs, cool things, and big surprises in store.”

What Comes After Season 8?
The return of Rick and Morty in 2025 is only the beginning. While the show is currently fulfilling its massive 70-episode order—originally intended to carry it through Season 10—Adult Swim has already doubled down. In a move that shocked even diehard fans, the network renewed the show through Seasons 11 and 12.
This guarantees a minimum of 120 episodes, making Rick and Morty one of the longest-running Adult Swim originals. That doesn’t necessarily mean it will stop there. With a global fanbase, new voice talent, and no shortage of bizarre worlds to explore, the show could easily rocket beyond that number.
For now, fans can mark May 25 as the long-awaited reentry into the Rickverse. After a pause that included the standalone Rick and Morty: The Anime spinoff, the mainline series is ready to reassert itself as a cornerstone of chaotic adult animation. Whether you’re in it for the portal guns or the existential dread, Season 8 promises a fresh injection of interdimensional absurdity.
