Scarlett Johansson Continues MCU Involvement, Possibly New Role

By August Tales

Despite her character’s death in Avengers: Endgame, Scarlett Johansson remains tethered to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, will she re-emerge in the MCU playing a new character? That’s still up for debate.

A New Role in Thunderbolts

Interestingly, the Thunderbolts trailer revealed Johansson’s continuance with Marvel Studios. However, she isn’t reprising her Black Widow role. Instead, she’s stepping up as an executive producer. Inspired by Kurt Busiek’s comics, Thunderbolts has Jake Schreier directing, with an array of executive producers including Scarlett Johansson herself.

Variety reports that Johansson’s executive role may result from her Black Widow contract with Marvel. In this context, she’s linked with Florence Pugh’s character, Yelena, from the Black Widow movie. Whether Yelena will take on the Black Widow mantle or assume another role is yet to be seen.

The Possibility of a New MCU Character for Johansson

As for Scarlett possibly portraying another Marvel character, it’s not far-fetched. Robert Downey Jr., for instance, will be playing Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. With this precedent in mind, it’s plausible that Johansson could return to the MCU as The Blonde Phantom—a character rumored to feature in a Disney+ series, which Johansson is supposedly executive producing.

A Mysterious Marvel Studios Project

In 2021, Kevin Feige confirmed Johansson’s tenure with the MCU, teasing a possible Blond Phantom role. Feige lauded Scarlett as one of the most talented actors, expressing how working with her had proven rewarding. Mention of a top-secret project involving Johansson as a producer left fans in buzzing anticipation of her return to the franchise, albeit in a new capacity.

As fans eagerly wait for news regarding Johansson’s future in the MCU, it’s confirmed that she will star in the new Jurassic World movie, alongside Mahershala Ali, who may potentially play Blade in the MCU.

Screenshot the date, folks—Thunderbolts is set for release on May 2, 2025. Expectations are high for Johansson’s first executive role with Marvel Studios. Whether she resurfaces in the MCU wearing a new character costume or not, we definitely haven’t seen the last of Scarlett Johansson in the animated universe.
