South Park Creators’ Show Update

South Park Breaks From Tradition: No Politics in 2024

By August Tales Comics

Get ready, folks! South Park, the animated powerhouse known for its razor-sharp political parodies, is making a surprising U-turn. For decades, the show has poked fun at U.S. elections, but for 2024, creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are hitting the brakes. That’s right—no Trump, no Biden, no satire-filled takes on the political circus in the upcoming season.

Steering Clear of Election Chaos

During a recent interview, the duo admitted they’ve had their fill of political satire. “It’s just not fun anymore,” Parker confessed. He pointed to their extensive skewering of former President Donald Trump, particularly through the transformation of South Park’s Mr. Garrison into a Trump-like figure. Reflecting on this, Parker shared, “We’ve done that, we’ve said all we could say. Going back to it now feels like running in circles.”

For longtime fans, this shift is seismic. Since 1997, South Park has taken aim at both sides of the aisle, skewering political figures with gleeful abandon. However, the creators now find themselves in a creative bind. “There’s nothing more to say about this election,” Stone remarked, hinting that their political satire may have finally hit a wall.

Pausing South Park Until 2025

But wait, there’s more! Not only are they skipping the 2024 political season, but Stone and Parker also revealed South Park will be on hiatus until 2025. Some speculate this break is due to ongoing negotiations with Paramount, while others believe it’s an intentional move to steer clear of election fatigue.

Parker and Stone didn’t mince words about the delay. “We’re waiting for Paramount to figure their stuff out,” Parker added. Stone chimed in with a grin, “It’s almost by design. We’re dodging the 2024 election on purpose.”

What’s Next? A New Documentary

South Park fans need not despair during the hiatus. Stone and Parker’s new documentary, ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!, is hitting select theaters soon. Premiering at the Telluride Film Festival, this documentary follows the duo’s purchase of the beloved Casa Bonita restaurant, a staple in Colorado and South Park lore. Look out for the film to stream on Paramount+ starting September 13.

The Calm Before the Storm

While South Park takes a breather, fans can enjoy the documentary and speculate on what’s to come in 2025. One thing is certain—the creators will return with their usual irreverence and biting commentary, just minus the 2024 election drama.
