Steel’s Origin: How Superman’s Replacement Almost Took a Very Different Path
Steel has been a loyal ally of Superman for over 30 years, but his origins could have been vastly different. Initially envisioned as one of the four replacements for Superman after his death, Steel has undergone one of the most compelling character evolutions in the DC Universe. However, his creator, Jon Bogdanove, revealed that John Henry Irons’ journey could have taken a much different turn.
A Different Beginning for Steel
When John Henry Irons first appeared in 1993’s Adventures of Superman #500, he was intended to be a very different character. In 2023’s Steel: A Celebration of 30 Years, artist Jon Bogdanove, who co-created John Henry Irons with Louise Simonson, shared insights into the character’s development. During the time of Superman’s death, DC was publishing four titles starring the Man of Steel. In the aftermath, each team was tasked with creating a replacement. Dan Jurgens suggested to Bogdanove and Simonson the idea of a “comic relief” character—a working-class “schlub” who dressed up as Superman.
Rather than pursue a comedic angle, Bogdanove and Simonson chose to explore the heroic potential of the idea.
The Evolution of Steel
Jurgens’ initial idea led to the creation of one of the most iconic additions to the Superman family. In the DC Universe, Steel is John Henry Irons, a former engineer who went into hiding after discovering his designs were being used to create deadly weapons. Relocating to Metropolis and working in construction, Irons’ life was saved by Superman. After Superman’s death, Irons felt compelled to use his engineering skills to build a suit of armor and protect the city. Impressed by Steel, Superman has been a steadfast ally ever since.
While they retained the concept of a working-class hero, Bogdanove and Simonson avoided stereotypes. Instead, they emphasized John Henry Irons’ heroism and moral integrity.
Steel’s Lasting Impact on the DC Universe
Steel has evolved far beyond his blue-collar beginnings, yet he remains grounded in integrity and determination. Though he occasionally dons the Steel armor, John Henry is now more focused on using his technological expertise to benefit humanity through his company, Steelworks. His journey from a Superman replacement to a standalone hero has solidified Steel’s place as one of DC’s most enduring characters.
Had DC followed Jurgens’ original suggestion, the world might have missed out on a hero as impactful as Steel.
