Superman’s Past to Be Retconned in Action…

Before he donned the iconic cape as Superman, Clark Kent was known as Superboy, fighting crime in his hometown. Over the years, pop culture depictions, notably Smallville, reimagined his origins significantly. Gone were the tales of teenage heroics in a costume, replaced by stories of a young man discovering his path. But now, nostalgia is back in style. A new creative team is taking over Action Comics to bring back the classic roots.

The Dynamic Duo Revives Action Comics

Enter Mark Waid, the esteemed writer with legendary status thanks to his groundbreaking work on Kingdom Come. Joining him is the talented artist Skylar Patridge, whose vivid artworks have graced numerous titles across both DC and Marvel Comics. Patridge recently dazzled fans with her visuals in a Supergirl backup story for Action Comics.

Waid has a knack for giving classic superhero tales a fresh twist. A prime example is his ingenious creation of The Flash’s Speed Force. Now, with Action Comics, he promises to modernize a small-town teenage superhero story while staying loyal to its essence. This venture is bound to enchant both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Waid’s storytelling technique breathes new life into the narrative, seamlessly marrying past and present. "I start the book with Clark as a 15-year-old boy, learning to be a superhero for the first time," Waid shared in an interview. "What kind of challenges are you facing? What is that like, learning to use your powers at that age?" The creative team is set on bringing a fresh perspective to Smallville, updating its rustic charm to reflect the modern world.

As they embark on this thrilling new tale, Clark journeys to Metropolis’ Expo of Tomorrow. He aims to blend in with the bustling crowd, eager to relish some anonymity. Yet, destiny has other plans. Circumstances might just force him to reveal his Superboy identity sooner than anticipated.

With anticipation building, fans need not wait too long. Action Comics #1087 will hit comic store shelves everywhere in June 2025. It’s a date to remember, as the legacy of Superman’s youth is reborn anew.
