By August Tales
Countdown to Thought Bubble 2024
With only a few months left until Thought Bubble 2024, anticipation is high. The press release just broke the news, revealing all the exciting plans for this year.
Celebrating Comics in Leeds & Yorkshire
Thought Bubble, the acclaimed comic art convention in Yorkshire, has unwrapped the 2024 festival programme. Jam-packed with film screenings, workshops, talks, and more, the activities will transpire between November 11-17 in various locales in Leeds and Yorkshire. What to expect? The comic convention, a major highlight, kicks off at the Harrogate Convention Centre on November 16.
Star-Studded Exhibitions in the Line-up
This year’s festival introduces Secrets of the Majestic, a new comic anthology edited by indie creators Chris Mole and Gary Moloney. Adding on, the festival features the first-ever exhibition of Tim Bird’s graphic novel Adrift On A Painted Sea. Also in the spotlight is Tripwire magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Joel Meadows, with a photographic exhibit from his new book, Face to Face: Creative Portraits.
Moreover, two free library exhibitions of Make Mine Manga will cater to novice and seasoned manga fanatics.
Insightful Talks with Distinguished Artists
The festival’s talks will feature insightful discussions. One such event is Banned Books with The Bookish Type. Publisher and librarian Harry-Anne, along with guests, will delve into the history and present reality of book bans. Also on the schedule are E. M. Carroll and Emma Ríos at Gosh Comics for a double signing event. Besides, Theo Parish will discuss their graphic novel Homebody and the journey it took them on under the title Rainbow Age.
Returning Events and Exciting Collaborations
Notably rejoining the festival are fan favorites’ Pints and Pencils and The Comics Forum. Also, Thought Bubble collaborates with Vice Press to commemorate the 40th anniversary of James Cameron’s The Terminator. The celebration will unveil an official film poster by Florey and exclusive, only-at-the-festival variants.
Showcasing Palestinian Artists
In a bold move, Thought Bubble, in conjunction with The Lakes Comic Art Festival and the British Council, presents ‘Enter the Mulberry Tree and Fly Free’. This one-of-a-kind exhibition outside the Middle East and North Africa will showcase works by 12 Palestinian comic creators. Curated by Lebanese writer and journalist George Khoury, the display will delve into personal identity and geopolitics through unique perspectives on Palestine.
Festival Tickets and More
Over thirty new guests join the comic convention lineup, including celebrated artists Charlie Adlard, Nick Brokenshire, Kristyna Baczynski, Becky Cloonan, and Dani. The Thought Bubble Comic Convention, taking place in the festival’s final two days, has its tickets on sale now. After a record-breaking attendance in 2023, the team eagerly anticipates a sold-out event in 2024.
Don’t wait for too long. Tickets are on sale now and provide access to all comic convention weekend events. These encompass everything from panels, workshops, guest signings, to vast exhibition halls.
Thrilling Plans Ahead
Martha Julian, Thought Bubble Director, expresses her excitement about the festival’s ambitious programme. “Events will be taking place across the whole of Yorkshire, with more to reveal soon. From workshops to exhibitions, film screenings to guest talks, and signings to tons more, we’re looking forward to seeing everyone in November.”
Julie Tait, Director of the Lakes International Comic Arts Festival, shares her enthusiasm about the Enter The Mulberry Tree exhibition. “‘Enter the Mulberry Tree and Fly Free’ seeks to reveal the unheard voices and experiences of Palestinian comic artists through an extraordinary installation. We are delighted to bring this beautiful exhibition to Left Bank Leeds.”
