Showrunner Defends Netflix Tomb Raider Anime
By August Tales
Fans of the adventurous archaeologist, Lara Croft, are buzzing, thanks to Netflix’s upcoming anime series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. Peeling back the curtain, the series’ showrunner has a reassuring message: this show is crafted by Tomb Raider devotees like them.
Disgruntled Fans Debate Over the Trailer
A month ago, the trailer for this series dropped on Netflix’s YouTube channel, gaining mixed reactions. It has received 15K dislikes alongside 10K likes, suggesting a divided fanbase. One common plea is, “Where… are… her… guns?” reminiscent of the Croft we knew in the ’90s carrying two holstered pistols. Other fans remark about Croft’s frequent falls and the new characters stifling her independence. Some also lament the loss of her fearless explorer persona, replaced by a trauma-ridden character with daddy issues.
Insights from the Showrunner
Interviewed by Ew.com, showrunner Tasha Huo made sure to affirm the identity of the Lara Croft they’re representing. Amidst concerns about the series becoming overly modernized, she stated, “This is the show that we’ve all been waiting for as fans. It feeds into all the stuff we love from the original games.”
Bridging a Gap in Lara Croft’s Story
This series explores the timeline between the Survivor trilogy of games, providing fans with a deeper look into Croft’s formative years. Huo elaborates that we’ll see “the life obstacles that made Lara go from that dark, sad, kind of traumatized person in the Survivor series into that bright light that she became in the classic era.”
More than Just an Invincible Heroine
Huo shared some reflections on the essence of Croft’s character. “We follow Lara as she’s faced with difficult obstacles. You’ve got to throw her to the ground. We have to beat Lara up because what makes her such a hero is that she gets back up, no matter what,” Huo shared. This recall of unending perseverance harks back to the gaming experience, where players constantly resurrect their heroine.
Meet Showrunner Tasha Huo
Beyond the Tomb Raider series, Tasha Huo has a compelling line-up on her resume. Not only is she stitching together Lara Croft’s story, but her writing prowess also extends to the prequel of The Witcher, Blood Origin, the upcoming Red Sonja movie, and the live-action film of Naruto.
Set to premiere on Netflix on October 10th, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft stars Haley Atwell as our indomitable heroine.
