Crocodile: An Unforgettable Villain in the One Piece Universe
By August Tales
Ice Running Through His Veins: Crocodile Unveiled
Few characters instill fear quite like Crocodile, a villain of note from the globally popular “One Piece” series. He’s the former head of the Baroque Works with utopian dreams, who grossly misused his Warlord of the Sea power. Post his Alabasta defeat, Crocodile continues to be a prominent figure within the saga. With the Cross Guild’s introduction, his relevance soared.
The Desert King, as he self-proclaims, wields the Suna Suna no Mi, an incredibly powerful Logia Devil Fruit enabling sand manipulation. His bravery and cunning political instincts make him a formidable player in the series. Unsurprisingly, he remains a firm fandom favorite, years after his featured arc came to an end.
Crocodile Locks Horns with Doflamingo
Crocodile showed himself to be a terror in the Marineford arc. Here, a revitalized Crocodile, packing more power than in the Alabasta saga, took on the biggest names he could find amid the chaotic warfare. One of his most memorable tiffs was with Donquixote Doflamingo, another formidable Warlord with a brutal love for violence.
Crocodile’s refusal to bow to Doflamingo, rejecting his proposition of alliance, stands strong in memory. After this, Doflamingo uses his Paramecia Devil Fruit’s string powers to decapitate Crocodile. However, Crocodile survives thanks to his Logia intangibility, and the pair proceed to battle on equal terms. Although brief, this skirmish demonstrates Crocodile’s power and fortitude.
Crocodile Gives Kudos to Galdino
In stark contrast to most of Baroque Works, who remained oblivious to Crocodile’s identity, Galdino, the former Mr.3, was distinctly aware. This meant that their relationship was chiefly professional with no room for personal ties. Failure saw severe repercussions, especially for Galdino, who came close to losing his life by Crocodile’s hand.
Their reunion in the Impel Down arc, however, showed a softer side of Crocodile. His former subordinate, Galdino, provided useful assistance in a prison escape. Impressed by Galdino’s protective Candle Wall that defended against Magellan’s corrosive poison, Crocodile gives a rare demonstration of admiration.
Crocodile vs Nico Robin – No Tolerance for Betrayal
When Miss All Sunday, aka Nico Robin, betrayed him at the end of the Alabasta saga, an enraged Crocodile punished her severely. Despite Robin’s deadly assassin skills, Crocodile deftly dodged her attacks and stabbed her in the back with his golden hook. This unexpected move served as a stark reminder that no member of Baroque Works was safe from his wrath.
The Straw Hats and Crocodile’s Trickery
During the Straw Hats’ visit to Rain Dinners, Crocodile prepared a trap. He captured them in a Seastone cage that negated their Devil Fruit powers. Then, he flooded the entire room revealing his master plan to overthrow the Alabasta royal family. Crocodile’s plot was disrupted when he had to escape his casino, realizing his minions had been effortlessly defeated by a “Mr. Prince”.
Crocodile Makes Unlikely Alliances to Escape Impel Down
In the unpredictable Impel Down arc, we saw former enemies become improbable allies. Without his crew, Luffy found himself reliant on fellow prisoners, forming a tenuous alliance with Crocodile to escape. Backed by Ivankov’s blackmail threats, Crocodile worked with Luffy, surviving guards and the irate warden Magellan, to reach the surface.
Crocodile Shields Luffy from Marine Attack
Crocodile may not be Luffy’s friend, but he does harbor a reluctant respect for Luffy. This becomes evident in the Marineford arc’s final moments when Admiral Akainu viciously pursues Luffy. Fearlessly, Crocodile intercepted Akainu, thereby saving Luffy and his allies. He emerged from this encounter unscathed, which is notably rare for Akainu’s opponents.
The Cross Guild Formation
After a decade, Crocodile resurfaces in the narrative post the Wano Country arc. He forms the Cross Guild alongside Dracule Mihawk and using Buggy as a puppet figurehead. Following the Warlord system’s abolishment, Crocodile seeks revenge on the Marines and uses Buggy to misguide the world about the leader of Cross Guild.
Crocodile Proves to be Luffy’s Nemesis
The Alabasta saga established Crocodile as a high benchmark for future villains as he handed Luffy his first decisive defeat. He easily outmatched Luffy in their first encounter using his sand attacks, leaving Luffy swallowed by quicksand. Even in the rematch, despite Luffy’s resourcefulness, Crocodile remained victorious.
Triumph Over Crocodile Finally Comes to Luffy
The third and final encounter saw Luffy defeat Crocodile for once and for all. Properly bloody, he landed consistent hits on Crocodile using his Gomu Gomu no Bazooka. The stage, set in the Tomb of the Kings Mausoleum, was a testament to Luffy’s tenacity and grit. Despite Crocodile’s might, his downfall was satisfying to witness. No doubt, he will be remembered as one of the greatest shonen villains.
One Piece’s franchise encompasses the adventures of the pirate Luffy D. Monkey and his crew, the Straw Hats. Their narration, introduced in 1997, has been adapted into several movies and most recently as a live-action series by Netflix. Its creation is attributed to Eiichiro Oda.
