Director David F. Sandberg has waved goodbye to capes and superheroes. He’s now returning to his familiar realm of horror. Known for films like Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, Sandberg’s next project is a feature film adaptation of the chilling Until Dawn. This popular PlayStation horror video game is getting the big-screen treatment from Sony Pictures. Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions are driving its development, nestled under Sony’s expansive umbrella. The movie promises an original tale that resonates with the game’s spine-tingling atmosphere.
Bringing a Fresh Narrative Twist
Screen Gems president Ashley Bucks spilled some exciting details recently. Reflecting on Sandberg’s vision, she said, "He captured the magic of the game while selecting key aspects that resonate deeply with fans." Bucks emphasized that they’ve expanded Until Dawn‘s universe with the core plot of friends facing sinister threats. The aim? A fresh story that’s as visceral as it is terrifying. But fans of the original game won’t be left in the dark.
There’s a hint of connective tissue linking the game to its cinematic counterpart. Bucks confirmed that Peter Stormare’s Dr. Hill character will make an appearance. Stormare himself teased a brand-new narrative with all-new characters and victims. It’ll be Until Dawn like never before.
A Collaboration of Horror Masters
Gary Dauberman, known for his work on It, Annabelle, and The Nun, is rewriting the original script by Blair Butler. Butler penned Sony’s vampire thriller, The Invitation. Dauberman’s recent screen adventures have included adapting Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, patiently awaiting its spotlight at Warner Bros. Plus, he’s onboard Disney’s live-action reboot of Gargoyles, a beloved animated series from the ’90s.
Until Dawn, the 2015 interactive horror sensation, captivated players with its dark narrative. A group of eight friends heads to a secluded mountain retreat, encountering deadly threats, including a lurking killer and wendigos. Each must confront their deepest fears or risk doom. The game became a bestseller and earned critical acclaim, snagging several gaming award nominations.
Sony hopes this adaptation echoes the success of its previous game-to-screen adaptation, The Last of Us. As for filming schedules or release dates, the details remain under wraps. But with hope, the chilling goodness of Until Dawn will haunt theaters before 2026.
