Constantine’s Hellish Powers Unveiled Amid Chaos in Wonder Woman #11
The rabbit hole of John Constantine’s powers just deepened, tapping into the dark side of life. The latest Wonder Woman #11 traces the eerie tang of Constantine’s abilities back to satanic ties, courting revelation with a side of eternal damnation.
Revelations and Devil Ties
In the heart-pounding onset of DC’s mega-event, Absolute Power, John Constantine, our favorite wise-cracking Hellblazer, got tripped up. He lost his powers, revealing the mystical mystery of his gifts and their connection to devilish matters. Cue the flashes of infernal lore. Who doesn’t love a little light reading about the devil’s wiles?
Wonder Woman #11, the brainchild of Tom King, Tony S. Daniel, and Tomeu Morey, introduces Amanda Waller’s maniacal mission in the Absolute Power saga. Waller has released power-stealing Amazo robots on the metahuman crowd. It’s kinda like your annoying older sibling swiping your toys, but apocalyptic.
Stealing Powers for Charity
At the Watergate Hotel, Waller’s Amazo crashes the superhero party, snatches Constantine’s abilities, plunging him into a powerless coma, and leaves other heroes wondering if they ate something funny.
Post-snatching, the Amazo robot, now wielding magic, blasts poor Shazam across the Atlantic Ocean. He crashes into the Eiffel Tower, and the heroes suddenly remember their GPS — Madame Xanadu. Wonder Woman asks her to track Shazam, but Xanadu refuses because John’s magic is “so tied to the devil, she doesn’t like to get near it.”
Hellfire Origins
Madame X’s revelation brings two hair-raising truths – one, Constantine’s estrangement from magical communities wasn’t for his unsavory sarcasm, but for the devilish smell of his powers. Two, the devil himself may have stakes in Constantine’s cryptic powers.
While there was always a faint whiff of sulfur about Constantine’s magic, the DC universe has danced around the origins of John’s powers. With Madame X’s revelation, the chair might just have landed on the devil’s lap.
Constantine’s dabbling with black magic and other occult practices paints part of the picture. His affair with demon blood, thanks to Nergal, gives him magical healing and ageless glamour. His ancient ancestor, the Laughing Magician, grants him a well-strategized ace in this mystical poker game.
Wonder Woman #11, hot off the press on July 17, 2024, has answers too hot to handle — for everyone, except the devil, apparently.
