Daredevil & Cable Cut from Deadpool & Wolverine: The Heroes Who Almost Were
Beneath the surface of the cinematic heavyweight Deadpool & Wolverine, fans are uncovering hidden “Easter Eggs” faster than a kid at an egg hunt. The film has been raking in dollars worldwide, thanks to its intriguing characters and cleverly hidden surprises. But the story of who was almost in the movie offers even more twists than a rollercoaster.
The dynamic writing duo, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, had a buffet of tantalizing Fox and MCU characters at their disposal. Yet, a few fan-favorites didn’t make the final cut, leaving some viewers wondering what could have been.
The Man Without Fear: Daredevil Dodges the Spotlight
In a candid chat, Reese and Wernick spilled some secrets from the writer’s room. Headlining the missed opportunities was the almost-inclusion of Ben Affleck’s Daredevil. The masked vigilante of Hell’s Kitchen was on their radar, but the horned hero never made it into the screenplay.
When asked about which Fox Universe characters were close to appearing, Reese seemed unsure. But Wernick was quick to point out Daredevil, saying, “At some point, Ben was on the list.” Unfortunately, we’ll never see what could have been. One can only imagine the kind of quips Deadpool would have had about Daredevil’s similarities to another dark, brooding superhero.
Cable’s Unplugged Comeback
If you’ve been following the wild adventures of the “Merc with a Mouth,” you’ll remember the grizzled, time-traveling cyborg Cable, portrayed by Josh Brolin. Unfortunately, Cable vanished from the sequel plans faster than someone who hears the word ‘commitment.’
The writers did contemplate bringing Brolin’s character back. They had access to nearly every actor and character in the Fox-Marvel universe. Wernick explained, “We wanted to pay tribute to characters who didn’t get their proper ending at Fox, to give them a legacy.” Their approach seemed almost like a ‘mutants’ rights movement’—but this time, it was all about screen time.
Despite their intentions, Brolin’s Cable didn’t fit into their vision for Deadpool & Wolverine. However, there’s always hope that in the vast, ever-expanding Fox-Marvel mash-up universe, Cable might just get another chance to finish what he started.
A Toast to the Almost-Heroes
So, the next time you watch Deadpool & Wolverine, enjoy the wild ride, but take a moment to remember the heroes who were almost there but didn’t quite make it. They may not have made it to the screen, but their stories linger in the minds of those who dared to dream of what might have been.
