If there was one beacon of light amidst the shadowy ensemble in The Penguin, it was Victor “Vic” Aguilar, portrayed by Rhenzy Feliz. Tragically, the series finale saw his untimely demise at the hands of Oz Cobb, played by Colin Farrell. Initially, Oz posed a constant threat to Vic. Yet, a bond developed, and Vic began to view Oz as a paternal figure. As Oz ascended the criminal hierarchy, Vic remained a loyal companion. But, in a tragic twist, Oz ended Vic’s life, casting his lifeless form into the river’s cold embrace. This heart-wrenching moment reverberates as one of the series’ most poignant scenes. Rest in peace, Victor Aguilar; you were the hero Gotham needed.
Vic’s Tragic Backstory in The Penguin
Originating from Gotham’s gritty neighborhoods, Vic was already facing a harsh reality. The Riddler’s demolition of the sea walls in The Batman obliterated his world. The ensuing flood claimed his entire family, leaving him adrift in a city of criminals. Forced into crime, Vic’s journey began with an attempted theft of Oz Cobb’s car rims. When his friends fled under gunfire, fate intervened. Oz caught Vic but spared him due to a shared affliction—Vic’s stutter. This connection, born out of their disabilities, initially hinted at a softer side of Oz.
Although their relationship started under duress, it grew complex. Underneath the criminal facade, Oz revealed a capacity for emotional connections. Eventually, Vic became a near-son figure to him. Viewers witnessed Vic’s loyalty and even a moment when he saved Oz’s life. Thus, Oz’s choice to end Vic’s life shocked many. Believing Vic to be a liability, Oz eliminated his attachment to him. It’s a bitter revelation of Oz’s irredeemable nature, challenging any previous misleads by the series creators.
Vic Shared Many Similarities to Robin II, Jason Todd, Including His Fate
Vic’s story echoes shades of Jason Todd, Batman’s second Robin. Both met their would-be mentors through attempted thefts. Oz and Batman saw reflections of themselves in these young men, leading to their mentorship. Sadly, like Jason Todd, Vic fell victim to brutal violence at the prime of his life. Comic book aficionados anticipated his fate when Oz menaced him with a crowbar, reminiscent of the Joker’s deadly attack on Robin.
Given Matt Reeves’ realistic take on Gotham’s universe, the likelihood of Vic’s resurrection is slim. Unlike Jason Todd, no mystical Lazarus Pits offer second chances. Despite this, Vic remains a beloved figure in Gotham’s narrative, representing a glimmer of goodness in an unforgiving cityscape.
